Imagine a 1,200-foot tower, an elevated public park the length of five football fields and a high-speed train linking a region’s major cities. For just $1 billion this kind of development project could belong to your city too.

For now, it belongs to San Francisco (of course). Or at least the proposal belongs to what is arguably one of the country’s most environmentally progressive cities. To help fight sprawl, San Francisco is exploring development plans that would build up, not out. The Transbay Transit Center (which would include the soaring Transbay tower) is part of a plan to move commuters out of cars and on to mass transit to curb pollution and traffic congestion.
